Thank You

We did it!

Thanks to your extraordinary support we have had a resounding victory.

With 100% of precincts reporting, I earned 65% of the vote. I am very humbled and proud to say that I won my home city of Glendale with 56.7% of the vote, as well as overwhelming margins in Burbank, La Canada Flintridge, and the Los Angeles neighborhoods of the district.

Because of my amazing supporters and volunteers, we were able to call thousands of voters and knock on doors all over the district. This victory is because of all of you, and I cannot thank you enough for your endless support.

I want to acknowledge our opponent Ardy Kassakhian, who raised important issues and contributed to a productive civic dialogue. I look forward to working with him and his supporters to find solutions together to the challenges facing the district.

I'm heading up to Sacramento with you all in my heart. I will work to find solutions to our devastating homelessness and affordable housing crises and the epidemic of gun violence, to expand our clean energy economy, and make sure every child in California has access to a world-class public education.

I am beyond excited for the journey ahead, and I hope to make you all proud!

With love and gratitude,

A major national progressive organization has endorsed Laura Friedman for State Assembly in AD43.

California State Director Sandra Fluke stated, "Laura Friedman is a solid progressive who has fought for good jobs, a higher minimum wage, and a healthy environment. She had the guts to take on the NRA to reduce gun violence. We are proud to endorse Laura Friedman for Assembly; she will be a champion for progressive values."

Voices for Progress is the latest progressive organization to endorse Laura Friedman. Among her other supporters are the Sierra Club, California League of Conservation Voters, National Organization for Women, Emily's List, Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund Los Angeles, Equality California, Americans for Democratic Action Southern California, Humane Society Legislative Fund, and the California Nurses Association.

Laura Friedman was the overwhelming first choice of Democrats in the June primary election.

Laura Friedman, Democratic candidate in Assembly District 43, today announced that she had been endorsed by the Humane Society Legislative Fund, the political arm of the national Humane Society.

The Humane Society is the nation's largest and most effective animal protection organization which addresses animal welfare through direct services for animals in need, running humane shelters and sanctuaries, and advocating for better enforcement of and stronger laws to prevent animal cruelty.

Sara Admudsen, Treasurer of the HSLF PAC said in a release that Friedman will "stand up for the values of protecting animals from cruelty and abuse."

Laura's long history of pro-animal leadership won her this valuable endorsement. As a member of the Glendale City Council, Laura worked with her colleagues to ban the sale of dogs and cats in Glendale. She banned the use of anti-coagulant rodent killers because of its devastating impact on wildlife. She is committed to protecting open space and wildlife corridors.

In her personal life, Laura refuses to purchase products that have been tested on animals. She has a dog, Finley, and two cats, Lil'G and Gunner, that are rescue animals, and is also the owner of a horse, Squiggles.

During the primary election, Laura Friedman was also endorsed by the League of Humane Voters, a national organization dedicated to "political action for animals" with an emphasis on supporting pro-animal legislation.

Two of California's largest and most respected organizations of law enforcement officers have endorsed Laura Friedman for Assembly in AD43.

The California Association of Highway Patrolmen (CAHP) and the California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA) are the latest organizations to join the Friedman team.

CAHP was founded in 1920 to represented highway patrol officers on California's emerging state highway system. Today, they represent 14,500 officers responsible for enforcing traffic laws and maintaining the peace along intercity highways.

CCPOA, founded in 1957, represents 30,000 peace officers serving in state prisons, youth facilities as well as state parole officers.  CCPOA is the largest law enforcement union in California, serving what is called "the toughest beat" in the state.

"I am delighted to have the support of these two respected law enforcement organizations and the over 44,000 peace officers that they represent," stated Friedman. "I have worked hard to coordinate with local law enforcement as a Glendale City Councilmember and Mayor, and I am proud that Glendale is one of the safest large cities in California. I look forward to playing a role to help combat crime and recidivism and to reduce deaths and injuries along California's highways as a member of the State Assembly."

Citing her exemplary leadership in the fight against Big Tobacco, United Nurses Associations of California (UNAC) has endorsed Democrat Laura Friedman for State Assembly in AD43.

"Nurses support Laura Friedman because she has a history of fighting to protect the health of California's families. Laura took on Big Tobacco and worked to make Glendale a model for how a local community could protect kids from smoking and exposure to second hand smoke."

-Denise Duncan, RN, United Nurses Associations of California

As a member of the Glendale City Council, Laura Friedman fought to pass some of the state's toughest regulations to protect residents from exposure to secondhand smoke. Glendale was one of only a handful of cities in the state to earn an "A" from the American Lung Association for their efforts.

UNAC, which is affiliated with AFSCME, represents 26,000 nurses and health care professionals at hospitals across the state. They are particularly significant in AD43 because they represent thousands at Sunset Kaiser, many of whom live in the district.

"I look forward to working with UNAC to fight for a healthier California," stated Friedman. "Nurses are at the front line of healthcare and deserve our respect and support."

Previously, Friedman had been endorsed by the California Nurses Association.

Toni Atkins was born in poverty in rural Virginia. She grew up in a house with no running water, the daughter of a miner and a seamstress. After relocating to San Diego in 1985, she served as Deputy to then City Councilmember Christine Kehoe, was elected to the San Diego City Council and then to the State Assembly.

She was elected the first openly lesbian Speaker of the Assembly and San Diego's first Speaker. Currently, Atkins is the overwhelming favorite to be elected to the State Senate in November.

"As someone who has made addressing California's housing crisis a top priority, I have been impressed with Laura Friedman's leadership at the local level to provide affordable housing for families, seniors and veterans," stated Atkins. "Laura Friedman will be a strong advocate for housing in the State Assembly and I am proud to endorse her."

"Toni Atkins and I both come from a background in local and regional policy," responded Friedman. "She effectively uses her experience to tackle tough problems from a statewide perspective. She is a model for how to get things done in Sacramento that will benefit every community."

Democrat Laura Friedman was the top vote-getter in the crowded June primary. Recent polling shows her heading into the November run-off with a 17% lead (38% to 21%) over her runoff opponent.

Friedman has been endorsed by outgoing Assemblymember Mike Gatto, State Senator Carol Liu, the Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project Los Angeles, NOW, Equality California, HONOR PAC, California Nurses Association, American Federation of Teachers Local 1521, AFSCME California, and the League of Humane Voters.

Mayor Richard Riordan Endorses Laura Friedman for AD43!

Contact: Parke Skelton 626-535-9616

Former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan has endorsed Laura Friedman for California State Assembly in District 43.

Mayor Riordan stated:

“Laura Friedman is an outstanding local leader who has worked hard to bring jobs and a healthy economy to her community. Laura spent 20 years in the private sector as an executive in the entertainment industry and, today, she runs a successful small business. As a member of the Glendale City Council she made the tough decisions during the recession to keep the city’s budget balanced — even voting to significantly cut her own pay. Laura Friedman will bring people together to solve common problems. She deserves your support for State Assembly.”

Riordan was a highly regarded attorney, philanthropist and business leader before being elected Mayor of Los Angeles in 1993. He served two terms as Mayor and is still regarded as one of the most popular leaders in the City’s history.

“Mayor Riordan made a big difference regionally and in the City of Los Angeles,” said Laura Friedman. “He spearheaded efforts to begin construction on region-wide public transit and helped streamline and reform city government to make it more accountable. I am honored to have his support.”

Prominent Education Leaders Endorse Laura Friedman for AD43!

LAUSD Board Member Monica Ratliff And LACCD Board Member Sydney Kamlager Endorse Laura Friedman for AD43!

Contact: Parke Skelton 626-535-9616

Two more important educators have endorsed Laura Friedman for State Assembly in District 43 — Los Angeles Unified School District Board member Monica Ratliff and Los Angeles Community College Board member Sydney Kamlager.

“As a teacher for over a decade and a school board member, I know we need strong, dedicated, effective champions for our public schools in Sacramento,” stated Ratliff. “I support Laura Friedman because she is committed to fully funding our schools and giving local teachers, districts and, ultimately, students the tools they need to thrive and succeed.”

In 2013 Monica Ratliff, with the support of district teachers, won election to serve the Northeast Valley in a major upset. She has been a powerful champion for transparency and fiscal accountability in the LAUSD.

Ratliff is an attorney who changed careers to teaching after coming to the conclusion that education is the most critical social justice issue facing our society today. She earned a Master’s in Education from UCLA and has taught 3rd, 4th and 5th grade in downtown Los Angeles schools for over a decade.

Sydney Kamalager was elected to the LA Community College Board District in 2015 where she helps administer the nation’s largest community college system. She serves as District Director for California State Senator Holly Mitchell and previously as Director of External Affair for Crystal Stairs, a child care development agency where she organized parent advocates and fought for adequate funding for child care services. Kamlager has graduated with a BA from USC and a MA from Carnegie Mellon University.

“Monica Ratliff and Sydney Kamlager are the kind of public officials I strive to be,” responded Friedman. “They are in it for all the right reasons, to make a difference for our communities and our children. I am honored to have their support.”

No Democratic Party Endorsement in AD43!

Kassakhian Fails To Receive Democratic Party Endorsement Despite Attempt To Stuff Ballot Box
With 18 Illegal Ballots

Contact: Parke Skelton 626-535-9616

The delegates of the California Democratic Party reconfirmed that they were not going to make an endorsement in the contested race between Laura Friedman and Ardy Kassakhian.

Kassakhian failed to receive the required 60% of the eligible voters. The vote was almost exactly the same as the pre-primary endorsement vote.

However, the Kassakhian campaign attempted to stuff the ballot box with 18 illegal votes by transferring in delegates from outside the District at the last minute.

These “delegates” were submitted to the Party on 8/3 and 8/5.  However, the ballots cast by the illegal 18 were signed, voted and dated from 7/16 to 7/19! Before these individuals were even submitted as delegates!

The State Party’s Credential Review Committee will meet this Wednesday to decide whether to accept or reject these illegal ballots.

It is inconceivable to us that these ballots will be accepted, however, if you want your voice to be heard in this matter contact Chris Myers, Executive Director of the California Democratic Party, and let him know that the credentials should be rejected to preserve the integrity of the Party’s endorsement process.

You can reach him at:
Please do so before 5 pm on Tuesday, August 9.
