Two more important educators have endorsed Laura Friedman for State Assembly in District 43 — Los Angeles Unified School District Board member Monica Ratliff and Los Angeles Community College Board member Sydney Kamlager.
“As a teacher for over a decade and a school board member, I know we need strong, dedicated, effective champions for our public schools in Sacramento,” stated Ratliff. “I support Laura Friedman because she is committed to fully funding our schools and giving local teachers, districts and, ultimately, students the tools they need to thrive and succeed.”
In 2013 Monica Ratliff, with the support of district teachers, won election to serve the Northeast Valley in a major upset. She has been a powerful champion for transparency and fiscal accountability in the LAUSD.
Ratliff is an attorney who changed careers to teaching after coming to the conclusion that education is the most critical social justice issue facing our society today. She earned a Master’s in Education from UCLA and has taught 3rd, 4th and 5th grade in downtown Los Angeles schools for over a decade.
Sydney Kamalager was elected to the LA Community College Board District in 2015 where she helps administer the nation’s largest community college system. She serves as District Director for California State Senator Holly Mitchell and previously as Director of External Affair for Crystal Stairs, a child care development agency where she organized parent advocates and fought for adequate funding for child care services. Kamlager has graduated with a BA from USC and a MA from Carnegie Mellon University.
“Monica Ratliff and Sydney Kamlager are the kind of public officials I strive to be,” responded Friedman. “They are in it for all the right reasons, to make a difference for our communities and our children. I am honored to have their support.”
